Darryl Turner passed away after being involved in an altercation inside a Food Lion in northeast Charlotte.

Damn, There seems to be an all out attack on black boys and men. This time it's in Charlotte, N.C. according to Brad Borders at News 14:

CHARLOTTE -- There are new details in the death of a 17-year old who was Tased on Thursday by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer and later died.

Darryl Turner passed away after being involved in an altercation inside a Food Lion in northeast Charlotte. There are now multiple investigations in to the case, including one from the boy’s mother, who has already hired an attorney.

"It felt like my heart was going to come out of my chest when I found out,” said Tammy Fontenot, Turner’s mother. "I just want the truth to come out, that's what I’m concerned with -- the truth." Police are investigating what happened when Turner was Tased during the altercation. According to a CMPD statement, an officer deployed the Taser when Turner refused verbal commands and moved toward police. On Friday, Turner’s friends and family visited Fontenot to help her through her grief.

First let me say that it is always sad when anyone dies, especial one so young over something so foolish. That being said, I think it is just as sad to think that the officer committed a crime by using his taser to subdue someone. As an officer, who is taser certified, I have to tell you that people do not just die from being tased. When I was certified I took the five minute ride of the other side of the taser so I would be aware of what the other person went through when and if I ever had to deploy my taser. Normaly when people die from being tased there are extenuating circumstances that are involve (normally unknown health issues or drugs). We are so quick to play the race card and blame the police for everything. Remember, police officer are people to and you can bet that we are not out there to put people under the ground. Case and point. Last night, me and another white officer caught a 19 year old man in the mist of burglarizing an apartment. We had him at gun point and were giving loud verbal commands for him to show us his hands. Not only did he not comply to our verbal commands, but he kelp reaching behind his back for something and would eventually turn and run into a back bathroom. The reality is that we would have been well within our rights to have shot the kid, but we practiced restraint and were able to apprehend him with out using such messures. Which was good, since he was just reaching for drugs, which he was trying to get rid of. I made you to let the little idiot, who happed to have a history of burglaries, at the ripe ole age of 19, that he almost signed his on death warrant. The point is, you never know what is going on in the mind of the officer or the bad guy, because you were not there. Don't just pass judgement until you have walked in the shoes of the other person.
Thanks.

Thanks for your comments. It appears that the use of the taser in this situation was an over-reaction by the officer. I guess it will be a judge and jury that decides. Your comments about the incident involving 19 old burglarizing and apartment, is almost an apple and orange comparison to what happened in this case. Just because one is "taser certified" means nothing to the dead 17 year old and the family. South African police were whip certified, Jim Crow police were cattle prod and fire hose certified, your certification argument holds no weight in this conversation in this one man's opinion.

But I do appreciate and respect your opinion, even though I disagree with it, in this case.

1. Nobody takes a "five minute ride" on a taser - the energy is released in seconds not minutes.

2. Eye witnesses stated that the victim - Daryl Turner - did NOT display aggressive BEHAVIOR toward the officer who killed him.

3. "EXCITED DELIRIUM" does not exist as a medical diagnosis and therefore cannot be a CAUSE OF DEATH.

4. If UNKNOWN MEDICAL CONDITIONS exist in taser victims result in death upon application of the taser then this is a very strong reason to stop taser use all together. The medical history cannot be reviewed prior to application of the taser.

5. The "unknown medical history" theory does not hold up when reviewing taser deaths in perfectly healthy victims.

6. The taser kills black, white, yellow, green, brown people with equal measure.

7. The presence of drugs/alcohol in taser deaths as a "cause of death" should be classified under 'unknown medical conditions' and is another reason to stop taser use.

8. A suspect may be killed for disregarding only one police command that I am aware of - that is the command to "DROP IT" when the suspect is holding a gun or knife and threatening another person.

9. It is not a capital crime to resist arrest, mouth off to the police, or even passively resist police commands (except for #8 above) yet hundreds of victims have been tased to death for doing just that.

10. Police killings - whether the victims are innocent or criminals have got to stop. Individual police officers have got to be prosecuted for murder. The death squads have got to stop.

11. Taser tests conducted on anesthetized pigs have shown that the taser can induce heart irregularities that cause death.
