Get ready to get pissed off. Even if you are not black, this will piss you off.
First, some context. Pat Buchanan is a paleo-conservative former presidential candidate who is now an author and MSNBC political analyst. In the past he has made numerous racist statements, as documented by many sources, including Media Matters. Did you think he would stop since his last shameful incident? I didn't either.
On the 21st, he released this shameful, inaccurate, and downright racist rant (called "A Brief For Whitey") against Obama, Pastor Wright, and the entire Black community, with some splash damage on poor Whites, Native Americans, Asians and especially Latinos.
Barack says we need to have a conversation about race in America.
Fair enough. But this time, it has to be a two-way conversation. White America needs to be heard from, not just lectured to.
This time, the Silent Majority needs to have its convictions, grievances and demands heard. And among them are these:
First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.
Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American.
Second, no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans. Untold trillions have been spent since the '60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the African-American community into the mainstream.
Governments, businesses and colleges have engaged in discrimination against white folks - with affirmative action, contract set-asides and quotas -- to advance black applicants over white applicants.
Churches, foundations, civic groups, schools and individuals all over America have donated time and money to support soup kitchens, adult education, day care, retirement and nursing homes for blacks.
We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude?
Barack talks about new “ladders of opportunity” for blacks.
Let him go to Altoona and Johnstown, and ask the white kids in Catholic schools how many were visited lately by Ivy League recruiters handing out scholarships for “deserving” white kids.
Is white America really responsible for the fact that the crime and incarceration rates for African-Americans are seven times those of white America? Is it really white America’s fault that illegitimacy in the African-American community has hit 70 percent and the black dropout rate from high schools in some cities has reached 50 percent?
Is that the fault of white America or, first and foremost, a failure of the black community itself?
As for racism, its ugliest manifestation is in interracial crime, and especially interracial crimes of violence. Is Barack Obama aware that while white criminals choose black victims 3 percent of the time, black criminals choose white victims 45 percent of the time?
Is Barack aware that black-on-white rapes are 100 times more common than the reverse, that black-on-white robberies were 139 times as common in the first three years of this decade as the reverse?
We have all heard ad nauseam from the Rev. Al about Tawana Brawley, the Duke rape case and Jena. And all turned out to be hoaxes. But about the epidemic of black assaults on whites that are real, we hear nothing.
Sorry, Barack, some of us have heard it all before, about 40 years and 40 trillion tax dollars ago.
I don't have all night to debunk this entire sack of crap, so I'm gonna touch up on a few issues.
Issue 1) Yes, white America need to be heard from, Buchanan. Just not from racist scumbags like you. You, who wrote that Dr. King was a "divisive figure" and that "We will never escape the prison of race. It will forever poison our politics." and called Mexican Immigrants anti-semitic to sell books, as well as supported the "Southern Strategy" of Nixon. People like you have no place at the discussion table. Your voice is not the voice of White Americans.
Issue 2) I'd hardly call White Americans the "Silent Majority". How does a majority stay silent when it controls the airwaves? You yourself are a pundit on national TV. That is not silence. In fact, that is talking too much.
Issue 3) America has been the best country on earth for black folks. Oh really, Pat? Because that's quite an assertion to make. Without black slaves in America, there wouldn't have been a Civil War. In fact, American and world history would be so fundamentally altered that you cannot say, one way or the other, if this country had been the greatest country ever for blacks. Instead, let's take it based on current times. Would you really agree, Pat, if you knew all the crap American society does to us? Issue 4) Now, if American society had not actively held us back from the end of slavery till the middle of the 1990's, then we would be a lot further along than we are now. Even you agree with that in your book State of Emergency. Try reading your own books sometime before you post racist garbage, Pat.
Issue 5) Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American. You have got to be kidding me. The man fought in Vietnam for the US Marine Corps. You can't get much more patriotic (or unlucky) than that. He fought and bled for this country and it treated him like crap when he turned, so it made him a little bitter. Ok, really bitter. But, you didn't say anything when McCain said "I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live"now did you?
Issue 6) You do realize that stuff like the Pell Grant and Section 8 and Welfare are for everybody, not just Black people, right? You do realize that those "poverty programs" you mentioned were not fully funded or deployed properly nationwide, right?
Issue 7) You are repeating some of the falsehoods on Affirmative Action. Get educated by going here.
Issue 8) Those same groups help out anybody, not just Black folks only. It just so happens that a lot of the people they help are Black. But hey, that's on you, remember? (Segregation)

I am white, and given these numbers, and many more statistics nation wide, is it really that unfair of me to see a black person as statistically (given the facts mind you) more probable to commit a crime? You want to further yourselves in the work place, it starts by graduating high school...i read somewhere that there are more black people in jail than in college...now even if some of those are because of some for of prejudice or police profiling, that is still far too many people left incarcerated...it just doesn't help your cause...which brings me to my next point. Rap/ Hip-Hop music. Listening to even just the more popular songs gives ANYONE the impression that going to jail, dealing drugs, shooting people, etc. is just a right of passage. First, only a dominant group can be "racist," because racism is an institutional, systemic force. Rev. Wright might be rightly pissed off, he might even be prejudiced in some cases, but Black people have virtually no institutional power writ large in this country, so they hardly make life harder for whites.
I have not heard anything Rev. Wright has said that is not right on the money in his criticisms of policy and attitudes prevalent in this country.
Yes, black people have some responsibility for their own success, which is why leaders like Rev. Watching the FOX News, CNN and MSNBC responses to the dignified, graceful and insightful addresses by Senator Obama confirms my deepest fear, which is that racism is still a red-hot demon in this nation. Pat Buchanan should have his ass fired. What he has said is SO much more malevolent and dangerous than what came out of Don Imus' thoughtless mouth.
As a white man, I am embarrassed by this old fool. Please don't accept him as a typical white man. The others statistics given by Pat Buchanan are correct also. Now why is there not a hue an cry about the black on white crime as there is on the white on black crime ?
I recall the Duke case where several young men of outstanding character were accused falsely of the rape of a black stripper. I recall that a prominent black leader had promised her a college education after the acusations were made. What ever happened with that ?
Black people in general seem to love pointing out how white people have enslaved them and how white people owe them an apology for enslaving them and how white people owe them a living. How about getting off your collective asses and earn a living ?
I am a fourth generation immigrant to America, my ancestors were respectivley from Italy,Germany and Czechoslovakia. they all arrived here at the beginning of the 20th century. They never owned slaves. And they worked hard their entire lives.
You want an apology for your ancestors being enslaved, try getting one from the tribes in West Africa that started enslaving other africans and selling them to the Europeans.

I am in fact very well versed in history and yes I do agree that the new world was built on the back of slave labor, both african and indian, in point of fact I will point out that as a percentage many more indians died than africans. Actually the major factors for economic expansion initially were gold,silver,sugar, precious gems,cacao, Later came cotton.Ivory was not present in the new world and guns were brought here by Europeans to subdue the native peoples.They were not a trade item until after the civil war.
Also a majority of the infrastructure in the North, to use the Civil War designations, were built by free laborers. The mines were worked by irish and welsh coal miners, the logging camps were worked by Canadian lumberjacks, the iron mills were worked by German,Dutch, and Polish laborers.
Also to point out a bit of math, at the numbers you have given for the rate of mass murder one african would have had to have been murdered at approximately the rate of one every 3 minutes for 300 years, I suggest that you actually check your numbers before making erroneous assertions.And I do use your word murder, not the rate at which peopl died from natural causes but the deliberate taking of another persons life through violence.
The numbers I cited for the crime rate were the numbers published by the US Justice Department, they are not propaganda just facts that people conveniently ignore.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, hardly a good friend of Pat Buchanan's, Hispanics, particularly foreign-born Hispanics, are indeed much more antisemitic than Americans generally.
This would seem to be confirmed by the GSS, which reports that immigrants from Mexico are more hostile to Israel than other immigrant groups. While anti-Israeli feeling isn't a perfect measure of antisemitism, greater negativity toward Israel would be expected out of more antisemitic groups.

It's ironic that you believe I don't know enough about black people, because I have probably been in more black homes (about three thousand) than you have. I have worked the "hoods" in South Central Los Angeles, Compton, San Francisco (O.J.'s old neighborhood), East San Diego and also have been in many a middle class Black home in predominantly "White" neighborhoods...You admit that Blacks avoid whites whenever possible but claim I am the racist ?...Idon't hate you, but I do get the feeling that you hate me...Chill out dude !

I have never once exspoused the sentiment that white people are superior to black people. And I never once did 'anonymous' post anything of the sort either. We merely made inquiry to the facts of the case stated by Pat Buchanan. Facts cannot be racist, they can merely be facts.
And as far as gangs,drugs,crime,gangster rap, yes they are invading White middle america, and there is a continuing effort to expunge the criminal elements And that is happening regardless of race. the only cries I hear is that when a black drug dealer is arrested is that it is racist because he is dealing drugs and is black. I cannot begin to tell you how many police officers I have heard speak about that topic.
I am already going to guess that you are going to say that they were white police officers complaining, and I can tell you sorry wrong, it was officers of multiple ethnic backgrounds. And some of the comments that were directed at the black police officers by black offenders is almost comically entertaining.
So again perhps instead of trying to blame whitey for keeping you down, just maybe tell the gang banging crack dealer down the street that they are no longer welcome around your area. Just maybe quit preaching a sermon of hate and racism, try teaching that through effort you can accomplish your goals.

I stumbled across this "discussion" while looking for something else and had to peek in. Sadly it was about what I expected: when "race" is the topic in a social context (as opposed to a spiritual one, i.e. what does the Bible say about our conduct, etc.),inevitably at least 1 of 3 basic things occur with minor variations depending on who is being accused of racism. In this case it is Mr.Buchanan and ostensibly other white people who agree with him: 1) instead of critiquing the points for "merit" or the lack thereof, we attempt to measure who's racism is worse or justified. 2) Once that happens the "who's worse" scoring moves into the context of a barter system: "We'll" cease our current viewing of people who look like "x" when THEY do something that proves them worthy to NOT be viewed or treated as such. 3) We strive for justification in the argument and the 'Tu Quoque' -"you do it too", fallacy of argument is made ready. The bonus dish is someone mentioning Jesse or Al Sharpton at some point as if they represent all people of color. I'm not going to address what Pat said but quickly point out one little aspect of why arguing these side matters deflect the addressing of the true issue which is the nature of our hearts and minds.
Here's a thought on the "who's side is worse" argument for those who like going there numerically. The same demographics that people use to point out the disproportion of crime and lack of education in the "black community" lend themselves to other conclusions. The rough numbers for the 2006 U.S. population based on "race" was 37.1 million for African Americans and 221.3 million for Whites. Now, if literally EVERY black woman, man, and child made it their business in 2006 to become racists particularly towards whites, you would still only need a little under 16.8 percent of the 221.3 million white population to embrace bigoted attitudes in order to completely outnumber the entire 100% of this hypothetically racist-trained black population. The point is that if people want to argue social morality using volume, by count alone, blacks could never be more racist in total(and thereby create huge anti-white influence and sway) simply based on the numbers and a little probability. On the other hand, a majority group comprised of 73% or so as of 2006, could do so, in reverse. Another point is a stat I read stating that in 2005, about 1 out of every 136 U.S. residents was incarcerated either in prison or jail.The total amount being 2,320,359, with 1,446,269 in state and federal prisons and 747,529 in local jails. Now another stat: In 2002, 93.2% of prisoners were male. About 10.4% of all black males in the United States between the ages of 25 and 29 were sentenced and in prison, compared to 2.4% of Hispanic males and 1.2% of white males. I can't give this a serious crunching without all the numbers for the same year but, if you used the 2002 jail percentages against the 2006 census numbers (of about 300,000,000) then .775 percent of the total US population would have been jail that year. Now within that less than one percent, based on these numbers, some number of black men equaling 10.4 % of those beween 25 and 29 went towards the 2.32 million total prisoners. Now I didn't go through that to condone or defend anyone. I just wanted to point out that what I roughly did by hand in a few minutes seems less alarmist than the "you people are completely out of hand" stats that cyclically make the rounds in the news and on the internet.
I think the main thing that irritates me is that whenever someone like Pat stands up and says in effect, "you people need to behave yourselves" not only are they guaranteed an "Amen" but people act like people of color DON'T talk about these things and aren't concerned about crime, education, teen pregnancy, etc. and need a wake up call every now and then. Just because it's not on TV doesn't mean it isn't happening elsewhere. I better stop. I'm sure I passed the 600 character limit a good while ago. It just occurred to me that I must have gone wrong somewhere. According to all those stats, I should have been writing this response while employing a poor vocabulary and bad grammar from my cell after lock down.
Yes you hit the nail right on the head.I am tired of people with their twisted statistics to justify their hatred of minorities.Thanks for clearing that up.Yes just by probability non whites are going to be marginalized out of mainstream society.We don't control the wealth in our communities.We are the ones most effected by crime,murder,drugs,moral decay ect.To here White people come on this site trying to lecher us about problems we cant control is enraging.Now we have the internet the voice of the African American community.We can use more constructive information to help us solve some of these problems.
I, the blog author, have been seeing these statements by people like Buchanan blared constantly throughout the media. And, as the comments here clearly indicate, these statements of his are partially the reason why Americans can't have an honest discussion on race. There are too many stereotypes, generalizations, and outrageous lies, even conspiracies afoot to have an open dialog. Instead of looking at solutions, we can't pinpoint the problems.
Maybe one of these days I'll do a "racism solutions" blog post. If anybody wants in, let me know by posting here.
Hi AgentX, I for one would be interested in participating in such a blog. One aspect of the overall subject of "racism" that doesn't get aired out enough in my opinion is the sometimes subtle difference between intent and net result. I'll give an example. When guys (typically it's men I see doing this) are hanging out and shooting the breeze they may come around to debating who among them is the "most American" Now a question, how do people go about validating their citizenship? I've noted 3 common ways but for space I will only list one for now: longevity, that is, how long has your family been here. You've probably heard at least once some guy (probably after a few beers) say something like "how dare you question my Americanism?! Why, my great-great-great-grandfather came here in 1896 with nothing but a half a walnut and a thumbtack and still was able to turn that into a chain of successful hardware stores before he died". So part of proving yourself in this game is showing that your family has been here a long time and has contributed in some way to the nation's "bottom line" Now, since the first slaves reached Virginia in 1616 I believe, there are some African-Americans who, if they could trace their lineage far enough, could never be trumped in terms of who's been here the longest. My own family has been able to trace our progenitors to a plantation in North Carolina circa 1830.
Since I know "my people" have been in the states for well over 170 years I have no doubts about where my home is and if I "belong" or not. An interesting and subtle phenomena I seen in the past decade or so is a vague notion that people of color in the US are comprised more of recent immigrants, illegal aliens, or students, than multi-generational US born citizens. Is this racist? No. Is this idea being spread by some calculated plan? I doubt it. However, my concern is the quiet malice of the net effect. And that is that it lays part of an overall foundation that suggests that "whiny black people" are johnny-come-latelys who recently showed up in America, have done nothing of merit for the country, and came out of the chute as it were complaining and waiting on a relief check of some kind. I'm exaggerating a little for effect but my point is, that there are a good number of "elements" in play within our society and cultures which are not planned racist behaviors or thoughts ---I'd go as far as to call a good number of them innocent-- but yet, have a net detrimental effect on how people of color are viewed and treated.
This is so sad to see people tearing other people down in an effort to change someone else's opinion. You both only end up coming across as racist. In fact both you you have valid points but niether side wants to see it. Statistical data is only based off of the crimes that are reported, and those that are solved. If a crime goes unsolved that data doesn't go into a statistic report for crimes commited by race. Because they calim to not have the kind of man power to investigate a crime after a certain amount of time has passed or that they don't have enough leads. Most of the time it this happens in a black community. There are many black men in prisons for crimes that they did not commit. One was just released recently after spending twenty five years there.
I would love to read more of this post and the responses, as I agree with you completely, Buchanan is an idiot bigot. But the green page hurts my eyes and screws with my vision when I look away. Egads. I did however see the NBC email and have sent my thoughts to them. Thanks for the post.
I only have this to say about the race issues given rise to in modern America (even where it isn't so modern). I have spent several years in the military. Enlisted 13 days after I turned 17 into the TXArmy National Guard. One thing you are taught upon enlistment is no matter where you come from, Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, Mulatto, etc., you aren't that stereotype. You aren't part of a solution until you quit being part of the problem. Everyone in the Army is Green. That solves the problem. You're in the same boat, fighting the same taxes, the same poverty, the same lack of benefits, and Gains of society. Victemizing ourselves or others will never solve any problems. We are entitled to the aid of the military as a nation. The rest is just gravy. And bigots like Pat Buchanan make me ashamed to be a white American.
To Anonymous from May 10. I'm not sure if you were referring to me specifically but, you may have been since I did write a bit on the use of statistics. Just to be clear when I was making my point I was thinking of the 3rd thing Mark Twain said about lies. Ultimately, numbers can reflect whatever one wants the outcome to be. I don't raise them up hoping to defend nor apologize for they are supposed to be "saying". I think that regardless of what the figures are, they represent a small portion of a broader issue and tend to hamstring the "discussion" if they are used as the singular reference point which some previous posters did. Having said that, I'm not afraid of numbers and will speak to them if people want to go there, but I do not view them as "Gospel" nor think they are as meaningful when discussing racism as some seem to treat them.
I love how all the "BOOTSTRAPS!" folks leaving comments here aren't brave enough to sign them.
Pat and those who agree with him here are in the minority. Rev. Wright served his country all those years ago, and he continues to serve his country now. ALL of our rights in this country were born from dissent. It's patriotic to question. To disagree.

With this latest rant, he's doing his part to re-invigorate the Republican party. Even though they hired a colored hand to chair the RNC, they see having an African-American president as an opportunity to increase the size of their ranks. Their ranks will grow and grow with KKK'ers, and all the white supremacist, radical right-wing groups the DHS reported on a couple of months ago.
